Dyad 1909 (In The Spirit Of Diaghilev) - 2009
Monday 7 September
Today, I am working on four central duets - each will be about three minutes long. I want them to be humanly evocative, intimacies.
This group of dancers is by far the best group I've ever had. Their combination of extraordinary technique and physicality and their capacity to be doing very challenging things mentally is unique. My style of movement has quickly become their mother tongue and it's a real joy to be in the studio with them again.
What I'm always interested in is dancers who are curious and open-minded - the mind is a muscle like any other in the body.
I author the work with the dancer - it is not something that is 'done' to them. There is always something implicit in the particular body I am working with that changes the way I do the choreography, and if it was another body in the room, at the time, it would be different. It is why I rarely have my pieces redone by different companies... I get very attached to the original version.
