Dyad 1909 (In The Spirit Of Diaghilev) - 2009

It's a schizophrenic creative day for me - I often have these. I started this morning on creating the dances for Breakfast at Tiffany's at the West End... it's brilliant fun dances of the 1940s with a super enthusiastic cast including the beautifully talented Anna Friel, who I'm very relieved can dance so well! Then I run straight back to Dyad 1909 rehearsals.

Originally, I imagined a much more open stage for the work but the Wilson sisters have designed three architectural objects with film surfaces on them. One is a body-sized square which has an angle next to it which is pure mirror; another is two projected boxes that are flown that have mirrors attached to them - they are like an exploding cube. I want these mirrored surfaces to create a feeling of 'not' completeness, of off balance, of disorientation. Because I will have these objects in the space I have a strong feeling not to do complex structures with multiple bodies for this piece; I am thinking of smaller combinations, one person, two people, maybe three at a push. Let's see.

My composer for Dyad, Icelandic musician Ólafur Arnalds, is coming in next week to finish work on the score. It's an amazing piece of music - its melancholic and spatial then cuts to extreme rhythmic violence - its hauntingly inspiring - Oli will be playing it live with a string quartet.
