Distributed Creative Cognition/Evolution of Form

In January 2008 Wayne McGregor and 11 Random dancers took part in a unique collaboration with the University of California San Diego’s world-famous Cognition department. How are people able to invent complex artistic works? How do people think with their bodies? 32 Cognition students, led by Professor David Kirsh, attempted to answer these questions by filming, monitoring and interviewing each dancer and Wayne McGregor daily, while in creation on a new piece, ‘Dyad 1909’. Their investigations will be the foundation for a piece of artwork planned for the foyer of Sadler’s Wells, London, at the premiere of ‘Dyad 1909’ in October 2009.
