The Field - 2000

Texts

The magnificent setting of the Rex, the old time cinema in Stratford, provided the setting for this multi-media performance by a local cast of under tens and over fifties, alongside Wayne McGregor | Random Dance dancers. Live music by composer Tunde Jugede and 10 live musicians provided the backdrop for this hour-long performance fusing live dance with digital film and lighting.

Wayne McGregor | Random Dance worked with a class of 10 - 11 year olds from Keir Hardie School, Canning Town during the Summer term and then for 2 weeks intensively to create material for the piece. Also, workshop sessions and rehearsals took place with elderly people from the East London Area, including the Hibiscus Caribbean Day Centre. The groups came together at The Rex for an intensive, exciting week of rehearsal and performances with the musicians, video artist and lighting designer.

"One didn't have to make allowances...It was marvellous - gave palpable enjoyment and fused a disparate community into a creative whole"
Jenny Gilbert, The Independent on Sunday

"Their discipline and focus are impressively unwavering...the Field is community dance with a genuinely professional edge"
Judith Mackrell, The Guardian
